The Italian Riviera is steeped in old time glamour and glitz. The coast of Liguria makes up the majority of this intriguing and beautiful region which resonates with style and an abundance of charming seaside villages. The area is a haven for tourists who want to discover the sweeping shoreline which is nestled between the French Cote D'Azur and Tuscany. It is a great place to base yourself when exploring Italy but instead of staying in expensive Portofino you will find that by going instead to nearby Rapallo hotels are much more affordable and there is a wealth of activities and cultural sites to be enjoyed that are right on your doorstep.
Rapallo is a captivating fishing village in the heart of Liguria which encompasses many of Italy's most seductive qualities. There are rows of changing cabins which line the palm tree fringed beach of this beautiful seaside town. There are also two harbors in the locale as well as a 16th century castle which hosts a number of temporary art exhibitions throughout the year. Despite the air of nostalgia in this quaint little seaside town, the air resonates with a lively, friendly vibe which sets it apart from its more glamorous neighbors.
There is an abundant variety of Rapallo hotels allowing guests to choose from budget lodgings to luxury resorts, making it the perfect base for exploring this inspirational part of Europe. The town has been home to great writers such as Ernest Hemmingway and Ezra Pound. Even Nietzsche wrote that the ideas for his philosophical novel, Zarathustra, came to him while walking on the two roads which surround the town. Today the area retains much of its charm and the vast array of Rapallo hotels that can be found here make it the perfect location to soak up some culture in addition to basking in the warm Mediterranean sunshine.
The jewel in the Italian Rivera's crown is, of course, the magnificent fishing village of Portofino, which lies to the east of Genoa. It was the haunt of superstars such as Elizabeth Taylor, Frank Sinatra and Ava Gardner back in the 1960's and little has changed here in recent years. It is still a capital of Hollywood glamour and is surrounded by the retail outlets of fashion powerhouses such as Gucci, Louis Vuitton and Hermes. It is easily reached from the town of Rapallo by boat or by road and is one of the main attractions for many tourists to the area.
Don't be deceived that Rapallo itself has nothing to offer apart from a place to stay, however. There are plenty of attractions right on the doorstep of a number of Rapallo hotels. The Funivia Ride to Montallegro is a spectacular cable car ride which offers some breathtaking views of the surrounding hills and the gulf. It takes around eight minutes to make the ascent and cars depart every half an hour from the Piazza Solari. At the top of the hill is the Sanctuary of Montallegro, a beautiful basilica which was erected in 1558. There are also two hotels at the summit which have restaurants serving both lunch and dinner and is also the starting point for several hiking trails from which the countryside can be explored.
One of the most important festivals in the area is the Festa dell' Apparizione della Vergine which happens in July every year. It takes place in Montallegro and features a vibrant and colorful procession from the town to the church. During the summer there are plenty of plays and films shown at the former Clarrise convent and there are also many smaller festivals which take place on weekends throughout the year.
Rapallo has winding, pedestrianised shopping streets and beautifully painted buildings in its historical center as well as an abundance of museums and attractions throughout the town. The seaside promenade skirts the harbor and features traditional red bricked buildings which are fringed with palm trees. There are plenty of Art Nouveau buildings along the promenade as well as a number of bars and restaurants serving exceptional local seafood and traditional Italian cuisine such as Tagliatelle which the area is famous for. The farmers market is held on most weekdays and there is a spectacular array of fresh, local produce available to choose from. The vast choice o Rapallo hotels, good public transportation links and the abundance of activities which take place throughout the year makes this beautiful seaside town a perfect place from which to explore all the Italian Rivera has to offer.
